- He was born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1935. He graduated from Kochi Prefectural Nakamura High School. His experience as an evacuee in Nakamura (now Shimanto City), Kochi Prefecture, is said to have profoundly influenced his scriptwriting. After graduating from high school, he took a position at a bank in Kochi; however, he resigned after three years to move to Tokyo, where he entered the inaugural class of Scenario Kenkyūjo (Screenwriting Institute). While working in cabarets and restaurants and continuing to write, he was recognized by the screenwriter and film director Shinobu Hashimoto. In 1961, he made his screenplay debut with the film Minami no Kaze to Nami (Southern Wind and Waves). After working on Nikkatsu Roman Porno films, he gained attention with the film Matsuri no Junbi (Preparations for the Festival, 1975, ATG). His television career includes penning four NHK Taiga dramas and achieving great success with daytime series like Shinju Fujin (Madame Pearl). In 1988, he made his directorial debut with the film Kyōshū (Nostalgia). He received numerous awards, including the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize and the National Arts Festival in 1988 for Kizuna (The Bond) and the Kuniko Mukoda Award in 1989 for Kōfuku na Shimin (Happy Citizen), Umi-terashi (Sea Light), and Ren’ai Moyō (Love Situation). In 1996, the film E no Naka no Boku no Mura (Village of Dreams) won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1999 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2007.
