- He was born in Akita Prefecture in 1936. After graduating from Tohoku University, he joined Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS). As a director, he was a member of the production team for drama and documentary programs, including Shichinin no Keiji (The Seven Detectives, 1961–1969). In 1964, he won the Prix Italia for the drama Doyō to Getsuyō no Aida (Between Saturday and Monday). In 1970, he became a founding member of TV Man Union, Japan’s first independent television program production company. He directed television programs, including Toku e Ikitai (Want to Go Far Away) and Umi wa Yomigaeru (The Sea is Revived). In 1998, he served as the producer of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Nagano Winter Olympics. In 1995, he received the Education Minister's Art Encouragement Prize for Kokoro no Ōkoku: Dōyō Shijin Kaneko Misuzu no Sekai (Kingdom of the Heart: The World of Children’s Song Poet Misuzu Kaneko, NHK). In 2008, he received the Commercial Broadcasters Association Award for Outstanding Programming for Nicchū Sensō Hiwa: Futatuno Sokoku wo Motsu Onna Chōhōin Zheng Pingru no Jitsuzō (Secret Stories of the Japanese-Chinese War: The True Story of Zheng Pingru, a Female Spy with Two Homelands, Yomiuri TV). In 2020, he received the Special Award of the Mainichi Art Award for his direction of Miyazawa Kenji: Ginga e no Tabi (Kenji Miyazawa: Journey to the Galaxy, NHK) and his lifelong contributions to the television industry. As a scriptwriter, he penned many works, including Hikare Sekigan 0.06 Jakusitsu Kyōshitsu no Kodomo-tachi (Shine, One Eye at 0.06: Children of the Low-Vision Classroom, 1990, NTV) and Mahiru no Tsuki Zoku Byōin de Shinu to iu koto (Midday Moon: The Meaning of Dying in the Hospital—The Sequel, 1994, TBS).
