Takahashi Masakuni

- He was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1943. Shortly after birth, he was evacuated to Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. He entered the Faculty of Engineering at Yamagata University but dropped out to move to Tokyo. He entered Chuo University’s Faculty of Letters, where he developed a passion for film, and he began making 8 mm film as a member of a university club. After completing courses at the Writers Association of Japan and Scenario Kenkyūjo (Screenwriting Institute), he was selected as the Honorable Mention in the 20th Newcomer Film Scenario Competition. He studied under Yōji Yamada. He then began writing a wide range of scripts for television and film. In 1990, his first play written for the Seinen Gekijo theater company, Isan Rhapsody (Inheritance Rhapsody), won numerous awards. His television credits include Boku no Nēsan (My Sister, 1978, NHK), Nēsan no Komoriuta (My Sister’s Lullaby, 1979, NHK), Nēsan wa Udemakuri (My Sister Rolls Up Her Sleeves, 1980, NHK), Mansaku no Hana (The Flower of Hamamelis,1981, NHK), Shichinin-me no Itoko (The Seventh Cousin, 1984, Fuji TV), Hassai Sensei (Teacher Hassai, 1987, NHK), Nonnonbā to Ore (Nonnonbā and I, 1991, NHK), Ojiī san no Daidokoro (Grandpa’s Kitchen, 1997, TV Tokyo), and Kabegiwa Zeimu-kan (The Sidelined Tax Official, 2001–2006, Fuji TV).
