Tomikawa Motofumi

- He was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1949. He graduated from Tama Art University’s Department of Sculpture. Following graduation, he worked as an art teacher at an elementary school in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, for eight years. While working as a teacher, he began training to become a scriptwriter and made his debut in 1977 with the drama Aishitemasu (I Love You), which he co-wrote with his mentor, Kimirō Komatsu. In 1979, his script Shinsetsu (An Act of Kindness) won a public competition held by the Television and Radio Writers’ Association of Japan. It was subsequently broadcast by NHK, and in a remarkable debut, it earned the Excellence Award at the National Arts Festival. The emergence of this big new talent attracted much attention, and he was selected as the scriptwriter for the NHK Taiga historical drama Toge no Gunzo in 1982. Seizing this opportunity, he resigned from his teaching position to establish himself as an independent screenwriter. Since then, he has produced high-quality drama series, including Kokoro wa Itsumo Ramune Iro (My Heart is Always Ramune-Colored), Kai (Oar), and Shin Totsukawa Monogatari (New Totsukawa Story). In 1991, he won the Kuniko Mukoda Award for Nihon no Sakura (Two Cherry Blossoms) and Kekkon Shinai Onna-tachi no Tame ni (For Women Who Won’t Marry). In 1997, he won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Screenplay for the film Unagi (The Eel). While writing, he visited Turkey as a special trainee through the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Program of Overseas Study for Artists to study Islamic culture, as well as Turkish film and theater.
