- He was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1932. He graduated from Nihon University College of Art, Department of Cinema. From the 1960s onwards, he was active as a scriptwriter, working primarily on television period dramas. He penned the scripts for robust historical epics within the NHK Taiga drama series, including Ten to Chi to (Heaven and Earth) and Haru no Sakamichi (The Slope on the Spring). From 1985 to 1993, he penned a total of eight productions for Nippon Television’s annual year-end period drama specials. As an indispensable figure in large-scale historical period dramas, he served as the creative backbone of the genre. He also served as the leader of the Drama Bank theater troupe. His signature one-woman play, Yokohama Rosa, is still performed by Michiko Godai today and has received high praise. He produced many other stage masterpieces, including Koshū no Kishi (The Solitary Shore), starring Hisaya Morishige. He received the Best Drama Programme Script of the Golden Nymph Awards at the Monte Carlo Television Festival for Natsu no Hikari ni... (In the Summer Light...) in 1980, the Honorable Mention of the Television Award for the year-end period drama special Chūshingura in 1985, the Excellent Program of the Television Award for Byakkotai in 1986, and the Golden Bear for Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival for the documentary film Horu: Munakata Shikō no Sekai (Carving: The World of Shikō Munakata) in 1975. He died in 2004 at the age of 72.
