Izawa Man

Profile
He was born in Gyeongseong, Gyeonggi Province, Korea (now Seoul, South Korea), in 1945. After the war, he returned to his hometown of Nagasaki. After dropping out of Waseda University’s School of Literature I, he moved to Australia. Following his return to Japan, his script was selected as the Honorable Mention in an NHK radio drama script competition, which led him to pursue a career as a radio and television scriptwriter. He received the Grand Prix at the Golden Prague International Television Festival for Michishirube (Signposts, 1983, NHK), the Excellent Program of the Television Award for Shiawase no Kuni: Aoi Tori Patapata? (Land of Happiness: Blue Bird Flapping?, 1985, NHK), and the Excellence Award of NAB Awards (now JBA Awards) for Eien no Atom, Tezuka Osamu no Monogatari (Eternal Astro Boy: The Story of Osamu Tezuka, 1999, TV Tokyo). His other notable credits include Totteoki no Seishun (The Best Youth, 1988, NHK), Wakarenu Riyū (The Reason We Won’t Break Up, 1988, TBS), Hyōten (Freezing Point, 1989, TV Asahi), Gekai Arimori Saeko (the Surgeon Saeko Arimori series, 1990–1992, NTV), Dōsōkai (Class Reunion, 1993, NTV), Yoru ni Dakarete (Embraced by the Night, 1994, NTV), and Watashi wa Newscaster, Meiwaku de shōga (I’m a Newscaster: Sorry to Be a Nuisance, 1995, TBS). He also wrote the lyrics for Toshinobu Kubota’s song Yoru ni Dakarete—A Night in Afro Blue, and he wrote the original story for the manga Georgie!
