- He was born in Tokyo in 1940. He graduated from Meiji University’s Drama and Theatre Arts Course in the School of Arts and Letters. In 1963, he founded the theater troupe Situation no Kai, which was renamed Jōkyō Gekijō the following year, and he staged a production of Jean-Paul Sartre’s The Respectful Prostitute. In 1964, he wrote his first play, 24:53 Tō no Shita Iki wa Takehaya-cho no Dagashiya de Matteiru (The Bus Bound for “Under the Tower” Is Waiting at the Candy Store in Takehaya-cho on 24:53). In 1967, he staged Koshimaki Osen—Giri Ninjo Irohanihoheto (Osen in a Loincloth: The ABCs of Loyalty and Compassion) in the Red Tent on the grounds of Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine. From then on, he worked in stage, film, and television as a playwright, director, and actor. In 1970, he received the Kunio Kishida Drama Award for Shōjo Kamen (Girl Mask). In 1988, he disbanded Jōkyō Gekijō and founded the theater troupe Karagumi. In 2003, he received the Kinokuniya Theater Award, the Tsuruya Nanboku Drama Award, and the Yomiuri Literature Prize for his play Doroningyo (Muddy Mermaid). He was also active as a novelist and won the Akutagawa Prize for Sagawa-kun kara no Tegami (Letter from Sagawa) in 1983. His scriptwriting credits for television include Maboroshi no Salesman (The Phantom Salesman, 1974, NHK), Yasuko no Kutsu (Yasuko’s Shoes, 1984, NHK), and Seishun Botan Dōrō (The Peony Lantern of Youth, 1993, NHK). He died in 2024 at the age of 84.
