Okubo Shoichiro

He was born in Fukui Prefecture in 1947. After attending Fukui Prefectural Fujishima High School, he went on to earn a degree from Meiji University’s Drama and Theatre Arts Course in the School of Arts and Letters. While in high school, he aspired to work in the film and drama industry. During his university days, he was a member of the film club. After graduation, he was profoundly impacted by a film scripted by the playwright Yoshiyuki Fukuda. He later met Fukuda and began working as his assistant for scriptwriting and directing. His meeting with Shingo Yamashiro was a turning point, leading to his scriptwriting debut in 1977 with the MBS comedy series Shingo Tondeke! Torimonochō (Shingo’s Catch-’em-all Casebook). Subsequently, he wrote a number of scripts for television series, dramas, and animation, including Mito Kōmon (1969–2011, TBS), Alsace no Aoi Sora (The Blue Sky of Alsace, 1985, Fuji TV), Hana no Arashi (Storm of Flowers, 1988, Tokai TV), and Shabondama (Soap Bubbles, 1991, Fuji TV), as well as Lupin the Third (1977–1980, NTV). He also scripted and directed period dramas and stage productions. In 2006, he co-founded the Nekoza theater unit with actress Yoshie Fukui and others. He died in February 2011 at the age of 63.
