- He was born in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, in 1946. He graduated from Waseda University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences. After graduating, he worked as a jazz bassist and a TBS assistant director, before establishing himself as a sought-after scriptwriter for a variety of daytime and lifestyle shows. During this time, he also worked as a magazine reporter, copywriter, and lyricist. At the age of 29, aspiring to become a scriptwriter, he became an apprentice to Shōhei Takaoka. After training as a live-in apprentice, he made his debut as a scriptwriter. He wrote a string of hits, including the NHK morning drama series Kyō Futari, the NHK Taiga drama Hideyoshi, and a television adaptation of Seichō Matsumoto’s novel Ten to Sen (Points and Lines) in 2007. His film credits include the screenplays for Hotaru (The Firefly), directed by Yasuo Tsuruhashi and starring Ken Takakura, and Kah-chan (Mother), directed by Kon Ichikawa and starring Keiko Kishi. He insisted on writing his manuscripts by hand, using his favorite fountain pen. He received the Hashida Award in 1994, the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for Otto no Shukudai (My Husband’s Homework) and Nanohana no Oki (Offshore of Rape Blossoms) in 2001, as well as the Grand Prize at the National Arts Festival and the Excellence Award of NAB Awards (now JBA Awards) for the adaptation of Seichō Matsumoto’s novel Ten to Sen (Points and Lines). He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2007 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2017. He died in 2023 at the age of 77.
