Nozawa Hisashi

He was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1960. He graduated from Nihon University’s College of Art, Department of Cinema. Aspiring to be a film director since junior high, he taught himself the craft of screenwriting, based on the philosophy that “a film begins with the script.” In 1983, he was the runner-up in the Kido Prize, known as the gateway for new scriptwriters, with his work V. Madonna Dai Sensō (Great War of V. Madonna). In 1985, after working as a plot writer, he made his debut as a television scriptwriter with the drama Koroshite Anata (Kill Me, Darling...). He worked with Yasuo Tsuruhashi, who directed that production, on a total of 16 works. In 1989, he wrote the script for Takeshi Kitano’s first directorial work, Sono Otoko, Kyoboni Tsuki (Violent Cop). He received the National Arts Festival’s Excellence Award, the Hoso Bunka Foundation (HBF) Prize, and the Excellence Award of the Galaxy Award for Ai no Sekai: Abakareta Privacy (Megumi’s World: Exposed Privacy) in 1991, the Kuniko Mukoda Award for The Night Before our Wedding and A Sleeping Forest in 1998, and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for Hanran no Voyage (The Voyage of Revolt). He won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Screenplay for the film Shudan Sasen (Collective Demotion). He was also active as a mystery novelist, winning the Edogawa Rampo Prize for Hasen no Malice (The Malice of Static) in 1997 and the Yoshikawa Eiji Literary New Writers Prize for Shinku (Deep Red) in 2001. He died in 2004.
