Terauchi Koharu

She was born in Gyeongseong, Korea, under Japanese rule in 1931. She then relocated to Fukushima Prefecture, where she graduated from Fukushima Prefectural Adachi Senior High School. After marrying at 22 and dedicating herself to raising her children, she enrolled in Scenario Kenkyūjo (Screenwriting Institute) at the age of 35. After being scouted by TBS producer Katsumi Ōyama, she made her debut as a scriptwriter in 1972 with the series Shiranai Doshi (Unknown Comrades), starring Jirō Tamiya. Her follow-up work, Hanaoka Seishū no Tsuma (The Wife of Seishu Hanaoka, 1973, CBC), was a critical success. She penned a string of hit series, including Osen (1977–1978, TBS), Otei-chan (1978, NHK), and Nacchan no Shasin-kan (Nacchan’s Photo Studio, 1980, NHK), and she won the Galaxy Award for Hanekonma (The Spirited One, 1986, NHK). She also won the Kuniko Mukoda Award for her work on Reiko no Ashi (Reiko’s Legs, 1987, TBS) and Iki no Iiyatsu (The Lively Guy, 1987, NHK). She died in May 2010 at the age of 78. Her other notable credits for television include Itsuka Kita Michi (The Road We Once Traveled, 1983, NHK), Gubijinsō (The Field Poppy, 1983, TBS), Chichi Kara no Okurimono (A Gift from My Father, 1985, NHK), San-shimai (Three Sisters, 1990, TBS), Korekara (From Now On, 1993, Fuji TV), and Koraku (Yellow Leaves, 1997, TV Tokyo). She died in 2010 at the age of 78.
