He was born in Gifu Prefecture in 1947. He graduated from Keio University’s Faculty of Law. During his student days, he joined Rokusuke Ei’s broadcast writer group Niconico-do. He began his professional career as a broadcast writer for variety programs, such as Kyosen & Maetake’s 90 Minutes of Gebageba! and Conte 55 Gō no Nande Sō Naru no? In 1971, he entered the television drama field with the drama series Tsuntsukuten, starring Shinsuke Minami, and made his debut as a scriptwriter with Kakurenbo (Hide and Seek), starring Mitsuko Mori. From that point on, he wrote for a wide range of genres, spanning youth stories and family dramas to period pieces. In the late 1980s, the series Dakishimetai (I Wanna Hold You!), starring Atsuko Asano and Yuko Asano, sparked the so-called “trendy drama” boom. Meanwhile, he continued to depict emotional human dramas filled with laughter and pathos in his unique style. He also participated in the Tokyo Vaudeville Show, a theater company led by B-saku Sato, and he worked as a playwright and stage director. He also wrote lyrics for songs. He won the Kuniko Mukoda Award for Kazoku Biyori ‘93 (The Perfect Family Day ‘93) and Heisei 5-nen, Onna no Ikusa (Women’s War in 1993) in 1992 and the Excellence Award of the National Arts Festival for Tengoku made no 100 miles (One Hundred Miles to Heaven) in 2001. He died in 2001 at the age of 53.
