He was born in Gifu Prefecture in 1954. After graduating from Nihon University’s College of Art, Department of Cinema, in 1978 and working as a freelance assistant director, he co-wrote the script for Oregon kara Ai ‘87 (From Oregon with Love ‘87, 1987, Fuji TV). In 1992, he directed Tofu-ya Nao Jirō no Ura no Kao (The Hidden Side of Nao Jiro the Tofu Maker, ABC). In 1996, he directed his first feature film, CAB. In 1998, he directed his second feature film, Shiawase ni Narou ne (Let’s Be Happy). Subsequently, he directed several films, such as Ikuko kara no Tegami (Letters from Ikuko, 2010), BANK (2013), Aru Torishirabe (An Interrogation, 2015), and Yamanaka Sizuo shi no Songenshi (The Dignified Death of Shizuo Yamanaka, 2020). He wrote the screenplays for most of the films that he directed. He has written and directed many television series, including Gekai Hiiragi Matasaburō: 2 (Surgeon Matasaburo Hīragi: Season 2, 1996, TV Asahi), Oregon kara Ai ‘96 (From Oregon with Love ‘96, 1996, Fuji TV), Suiri Saeko no Omiai Jiken-bo (Saeko Suiri’s Case Files of Matchmaking Partners, 2000, TBS), Kogoeru Kirin (The Frozen Giraffe, 2001, NTV), and Nagasaki de Kieta Onna (The Woman Who Disappeared in Nagasaki, 2002, BS Japan). He has also been active across various fields, notably making his stage directing debut in 2008 with the play Hotel NEET Monogatari (Hotel NEET Story).
