Yoda Yoshikata

- He was born in Kyoto City in 1909. After working for Sumitomo Bank, he joined the scriptwriting department at Nikkatsu Uzumasa Studio in 1930. His debut work was the silent film Umi no Nai Minato (Port Without Sea) in 1931. In 1936, he moved to Daiichi Eiga and made his debut as a screenwriter for the sound film Naniwa Elegy, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. He subsequently wrote many scripts for Kenji Mizoguchi’s works, including Saikaku Ichidai Onna (The Life of Oharu, 1952) and Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moon and Rain, 1953), and he was hailed as a master of literary cinema. His television scripts include Yajūrō Shimatsu (The Yajuro Affairs, 1956, NHK), Tokai no Niji (Rainbow in the City, 1958, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), Aki no Hito Naraba (If One is an Autumn Person, 1959, Kansai TV), Beni no Tsuita Sakazuki (The Lipstick-Stained Sake Cup, 1961, MBS), Ashi wa Atatakakatta (Warm Feet, 1963, ABC), Docchi mo Docchi (Much the Same, 1965, NTV), and Kōgo Jihen (The Kogo Incident, 1977, Shikoku Broadcasting [JRT]). He adapted works by various authors, including Monzaemon Chikamatsu, Saikaku Ihara, Toyoko Yamazaki, Tōkō Kon, Shūgorō Yamamoto, and Sawako Ariyoshi. He later served as a professor and dean of the Visual Concept Planning Department at Osaka University of Arts. He died in November 1991 at the age of 82.
