- He was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1912. In addition to being a notable film director and screenwriter, he influenced the world of television not only through his scripts but also through Kindai Eiga Kyokai, the production company he founded in 1950 and served as chairperson, which produced many excellent television dramas. In 1934, he entered the film industry and began writing scripts for Shinko Kinema. He studied under the director Kenji Mizoguchi. After working for Kowa Films, he moved to Shochiku Ofuna Studio in 1944 before being drafted. Upon being demobilized after the war, he dedicated himself to screenwriting as a full-time profession. He left Shochiku in 1950. He made his directorial debut in 1951 with Aisai Monogatari (Story of a Beloved Wife), and he subsequently received numerous awards for his directorial works. His television scripts include Father (1958, NHK), Saiki (Resurrection, 1960, Fuji TV), Wakamono-tachi (Young Men, 1962, NHK), Watashi wa Mō Utawanai (I Won’t Sing Anymore, 1963, Mainichi Broadcasting [RKB]), and Tennō no Seiki (The Emperor’s Century, 1971, ABC). He also adapted many other works for television. He died in May 2012 at the age of 100.
