Tsutsui Keisuke

- He was born in Kanda, Tokyo, in 1918. While studying at Keio University, he was actively involved in the theater scene. After dropping out of university in 1941, he began writing scripts for radio dramas. In 1950, he wrote Santa Monogatari for NHK Radio 1. When television broadcasting began in 1953, he wrote Santa Monogatari for NHK Television that same year. In 1958, during the dawn of television, he alternated with Izuho Sudō to write the scripts for NHK’s live drama series Basu Dōri Ura (Behind the Bus Street, 1958–1963), which resonated with the working class at the time and became a huge hit. He then turned to the world of children’s literature, publishing numerous works and receiving awards, such as the Hans Christian Andersen Award. His television scripts include Futatsu no Otsuki-sama (Two Moons, 1953, NHK), Bikkuri-kun (1958, NHK Educational TV), Maria no Minato e (To Maria’s Port, 1960, NHK), Kōfuku Shiken (Happiness Test, 1964, NHK), Konzen Mitei Ryoko (Undecided Prewedding Trip, 1965, NHK), and The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1978, NHK), alongside many adaptations. He died in 2005 at the age of 87.
