Oshima Nagisa
- Profile
- He was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1932. After graduating from Kyoto University in 1954, he joined Shochiku Ofuna Studio. He made his directorial debut in 1959 with the film Ai to Kibōno Machi (A Town of Love and Hope) and went on to release a number of controversial works. He gained a reputation as the leading flag bearer of the Japanese New Wave. However, he left Shochiku in response to the cancellation of his film and founded the independent production company Sōzōsha in 1961, followed by Oshima Productions in 1975. Despite a period of decline in the Japanese film industry, he consistently produced innovative works, gaining acclaim not only domestically but also internationally and winning prestigious awards. In 1960, he expanded his reach into the world of television, contributing to dramas and documentaries through scriptwriting, adaptation, and direction, as well as on-screen appearances. His television scripts include Satsui (Intention to Kill, 1960, NHK), Seisyun no Fukaki Fuchi yori (From the Deep Abyss of Youth, 1960, Kansai TV), Itsuka Kyokkō no Kagayaku Machi ni (Someday in the City Where the Aurora Shines, 1963, TBS), and Shichinin no Mago (Seven Grandchildren, 1964, TBS). His wife was actress Akiko Koyama. He suffered a stroke in 1996; despite battling the aftereffects, his creative drive remained undiminished. He died in 2013 at the age of 80.
