Shiina Rinzo
- Profile
- He was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1911. He was a novelist. His childhood was defined by hardship and poverty; both of his parents were involved in extramarital affairs, and they eventually took their own lives. He ran away from home at the age of 14 and dropped out of the former Himeji Junior High School. After working at a fruit shop, a restaurant, and a match factory, he eventually joined Ujigawa Electric Power Company (now Sanyo Electric Railway). While in serving time in prison for being a communist, his extensive reading behind bars inspired him to pursue a career in literature. His 1947 novel Shin'ya no Shūen (Midnight Banquet) was both his debut and a monumental achievement in postwar literature. After he became a Christian in 1950, his works became known for his unique religious style. Beyond his novels, he also achieved great success as a playwright and scriptwriter. His television scripts include Sono Otoko (That Man, 1959, NHK), Shūdensha Dassen su (The Last Train Derailed, 1960, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), Jiyū e no Shōgen (Testimony to Freedom, 1960, NHK), Matte iru Aida no (While We Are Waiting, 1962, NTV), Wareware wa Shisya to Tomo ni (We Are With the Dead, 1962, NHK), and Yakusoku (The Promise, 1964, NHK). From 1957 onward, he continued to write while battling heart disease. He died in March 1973 at the age of 61.
