Sugawa Eizo

- He was born in Osaka City in 1930. His wife was the actress Akemi Mari. In 1953, he joined Toho after graduating from the University of Tokyo. He wrote the screenplay for Kiken na Eiyū (A Dangerous Hero) while working as an assistant director. The film was produced and released in 1957. He made his directorial debut with the film Seishun Hakusho: Otona ni wa Wakaranai (Youth Diary: Adults Don’t Understand, 1958, Toho) just five years after joining the company, at the young age of 27. In 1976, he left Toho and founded Eizō Sugawara Productions. That same year, the company produced and released the film Nihonjin no Heso (The Japanese Navel) in partnership with ATG. Following this, he became a prolific scriptwriter for television. He received the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival for Igata (Mold, NHK) in 1963 and the Galaxy Award for the NHK Ginga drama series Chichi to Musume no Kisetsu (The Season of Father and Daughter, NHK) in 1969. In addition to writing scripts for series such as Anata no Tonari wa Dare (Who’s Next to You?, 1962, NHK), Ashita no Kazoku (Tomorrow’s Family,1965–1967, NHK), Shichinin no Keiji (The Seven Detectives, 1978–1979, TBS), and Onna no Toride (Women’s Fortress, 1991, Tokai TV), he also wrote for many two-hour dramas and adaptations. He died in 1998 at the age of 68.
