- He was born in Ushigome, Tokyo, in 1911. He was a scriptwriter and film director. After graduating from Nihon University’s College of Art, he joined Shochiku Kamata Studio in 1934 as a trainee scriptwriter, where he wrote many original scripts. In 1942, he left Shochiku and founded Kokumin Kyakuhonsha, the organization that he established to advocate for the independence of screenplays and to oppose the system of binding scriptwriters exclusively to film companies. After the war, he founded the Scenario Bungei Association and began publishing the magazine Scenario Bungei. One of his most notable screenplays is Gendai-jin (Modern People, 1952, Shochiku), and his directorial works include Kōjō no Tsuki (The Moon over the Ruined Castle, 1958, Toho). As soon as television broadcasting began, he started writing many television drama scripts. His scriptwriting credits include Chōsen (The Challenge, 1959, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), Kenji (The Prosecutor, 1961–1963, Fuji TV), Kuroi Honoo (Black Flame, 1963, NHK), Ikuyamakawa (Many Mountains and Rivers, 1963, ABC), Shichinin no Keiji (The Seven Detectives, 1961–1969, TBS), and Otō-san no Hanayome Ishō (Father’s Wedding Dress, 1966, NTV). He has also adapted many original works. Furthermore, he taught at Nihon University’s College of Art and devoted himself to the study of film history. He died in 1979 at the age of 68.
