Tomita Kotaro

Profile
He was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1925. After working as a high school teacher, he joined the Gekidan Mingei theater company and began appearing in supporting roles in film, television, and theater. In addition to lecturing at Mingei Theatre Company’s Institute and Nihon University’s College of Art, he led the Tomita Engi Juku (Tomita Acting School), dedicating his efforts to mentoring the next generation of actors. His acting career spanned multiple film studios and major networks across Japan. His notable television acting credits include NHK’s taiga historical dramas and its morning drama series Mito Kōmon and Taiyō ni Hoero! (Roar at the Sun!). His scriptwriting credits include the extant work Ubugoe (The First Cry, KBC), which was broadcast on Sharp Getsuyō Gekijō (Monday Theater) in August 1963. The drama was adapted from a winning entry in a script competition held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting (KBC). Tomita also appeared in the production, which went on to win the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival. The work addressed the experiences of atomic bomb survivors. Given that his own wife was an atomic bomb survivor, it is clear that the script was a deeply personal project for him. He died in 2004 at the age of 79.
