Inoue Kazuo

He was born in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 1924. He was drafted while a student in 1944 and demobilized the following year. While attending Waseda University, he founded the Koyurugiza theater company with the aim of becoming a playwright. After graduating from university, he joined the Screenwriting Department at Shochiku Ofuna Studio. He studied under Kaneto Shindō and served as assistant director to Minoru Shibuya, Yūzō Kawashima, and Yasujirō Ozu. He wrote and directed the film Chichi to Ko to Haha (Father, Child, and Mother, 1956, produced by Kyoto Eiga and distributed by Shochiku), before being promoted to director at Shochiku in 1958. In 1964, he canceled his exclusive contract with Shochiku and went freelance. He then joined Tokyo Eiga before going freelance again in 1968. In 1971, he founded Ban’yusha, a production company. He also wrote for television; his scripts include Yane no Shita (Under the Roof, 1962, NTV), Taiyō no Oka (Sun Hill, 1966–1967, NHK), Dokan to Ippatsu! (One Big Blast!, 1968–1969, TBS), Hamaguri Taishō (Captain Clam, 1970, NTV), and Shin Tokyo Monogatari (The New Tokyo Story, 1989, TBS). His adaptations include Nigorie (Troubled Waters, original story by Ichiyō Higuchi, 1964, Fuji TV), Adauchi (Vengeance, original story by Shūgorō Yamamoto, 1968, TBS), and Dokkoi-sho (Heave-ho, original story by Shūsaku Endō, 1969, Tokai TV). He died in 2011 at the age of 86.
