- He was born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1914. After graduating from Sakata Commercial High School, he moved to Tokyo and joined Toho Studios. He later worked for various film companies, including Toho, Daiei, and Nikkatsu, before going freelance in 1968. He directed the 1953 film Ashita wa Docchi da (Which Way Is Tomorrow). Following this, he directed and penned a wide array of works for film and television. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1963 Nikkatsu film Nippon Konchūki (The Insect Woman) with director Shōhei Imamura.This production earned him the 14th Blue Ribbon Award for Best Screenplay; he subsequently went on to receive numerous accolades. His other film credits include Enjō (Conflagration), Ari no Machi no Maria (Maria of the Ant City), Kagi (The Key), Akai Satsui (Intentions of Murder), Kamigami no Fukaki Yokubō (The Profound Desire of the Gods), Shinobugawa (Shinobu River), and Hanare Goze Orin (The Ballad of Orin). His credits for television include Ishinaka Sensei Gyōjōki (The Conduct of Professor Ishinaka, 1957, NTV), Dagon-san no Koibito (Dagon’s Sweetheart, 1961, TBS), Kamo no Osane (Osane of Kamo, 1964, Fuji TV), Saraba D51 (Farewell the D51, 1972, HBC), and Fūfugenka to Tantei (The Detective and the Spat, 1982, HBC). In 1967, he co-wrote the script for Wakare (The Separation, HBC) with Shotarō Yasuoka. The year he died is not known.
