Fukuda Yoshiyuki

- He was born in Tokyo in 1931. After graduating from the University of Tokyo’s Department of French Language and Literature, he worked as a reporter for the Tokyo Times. Later, he studied under stage director Shirō Okakura and served as his assistant director. In 1957, he released the full-length play Nagai Bohyōno Retsu (A Long Row of Graves). The following year, he won the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival for Oppekepe. In the 1960s, he gained prominence as a leading figure in the theater of this period, publishing such masterpieces as Sanada Fūunroku (The Chronicles of Sanada), Hakamadare wa Doko da (Where Is Hakamadare?) and Majo Densetsu (Legend of the Witch). During the same period, he also expanded into the commercial theater field, working as a stage director for the musical Peter Pan. Furthermore, he wrote many scripts for film and television, including the NHK Taiga historical drama Kaze to Kumo to Niji to (Wind, Clouds, and Rainbow) in 1976. Other notable works include Mikazuki no Kage: Amago Jūyūshi (Shadow of the Crescent Moon: The War Chronicles of the Amago Ten Braves, 1961, NHK), Oppekepe (1962, NHK), Ibun Hagakure (A Different Tale of Hagakure, 1964, NHK), Kanō Taii Fujin (Captain Kano’s Wife,1965, TBS), Yūdachi (Summer Rain, 1966, TBS), and Tatakai Sunde Hi ga Kurete (The Battle Ends as Day Fades, 1969, TBS). He also wrote many scripts for the Doyō Wide Gekijō (Saturday Night at the Mysteries) series on TV Asahi Network. He was also active as an actor. He died in 2025 at the age of 91.
