He was born in Tokyo in 1943. At Tokyo Metropolitan Komaba High School, he was a classmate of the singer Tokiko Katō, and they were in the same broadcasting club. After dropping out of Waseda University, he completed his studies at the Haiyuza Theater Company’s Training School . In 1966, he founded the underground theater Jiyūgekijō. He gained recognition with plays such as Atashi no Beatles (My Beatles). In 1968, he became a founding member of Engeki Center 68 (now the Gekidan Kuro Tent) theater company. Since 1970, he has been a leading stage director and playwright at large tent theaters that perform all over the country. During this period, he wrote several plays, including as Kigeki Shōwa no Sekai: Saubu-saku (The Shōwa World Comedy Trilogy), Nezumi Kozō Jirokichi (Jirokichi the Rat), Tsubasa wo Moyasu Tenshitachi no Butō (Dance of Angels with Burning Wings), Yoru to Yoru no Yoru (The Night of Nights), Gyakukōsen Tamanegi (Backlit Onion), Kafū no Opera (Kafū’s Opera), and Zettai Hikoki (Absolute Airplane). As a stage director, he was equally prolific, directing not only his own plays but also the Japanese premieres of foreign works. His portfolio spanned a vast array of genres, ranging from traditional performing arts (like Noh, Japanese classical dance (Nihon Buyō), and puppetry) to opera, contemporary dance, and revues. He heads his own theater company, Kamomeza. He also served as the artistic director of Za-Koenji in Suginami, Tokyo; he remains actively involved with both private and public theaters.
