Okamoto Katsumi

- He was born in Tottori Prefecture in 1930. Upon graduating from Waseda University, his original play Kogarashi (Cold Autumn Wind) was selected in a playwriting contest held by the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum at Waseda University. He signed a five-year contract with Nippon Broadcasting System from 1954, where he was involved in program planning and radio playwriting. In 1959, he made his debut as a television scriptwriter with Okuman Chōja (The Billionaire), a drama aired during experimental broadcasts prior to the official launch of Fuji TV. Following his work on the Fuji TV dramas Han’nya (The Hannya Mask) and Yukiyama ni Kita Otoko (The Man Who Came to the Snowy Mountain), he went on to write numerous television scripts. He won the Excellence Awards at the National Arts Festival for Hashire Gangu (Run, Toys) in 1969 and Kizuna (The Bond) in 1972. His other credits include Sayonara Konnichiwa (Goodbye, Hello, 1973, NTV), Rakuda no Yume (The Camel’s Dream, 1976, NHK), Yūhigaoka no Sōridaijin (The Prime Minister of Yuhigaoka, 1978, NTV), and the Seishi Yokomizo series installment Mitsukubi Tō (Three-Headed Tower, 1977, TBS). From the 1980s onward, he focused primarily on two-hour television mysteries, scripting series such as Mitsuhiko Asami Mystery, Chiho-kisha Tachibana Yosuke (Local Reporter Yosuke Tachibana), and Muta Keijikan Jiken File (The Detective Muta’s Case Files). His younger brother was the lyricist Osami Okamoto. He died in 2002 at the age of 72.
