Uzuno Akihiko

He was born in Osaka Prefecture in 1934. He dropped out of the Faculty of Letters at Doshisha University. He was active as a playwright and stage director. Together with his wife, the actress Eiko Shin’ya, he founded the Gekidan Nobi no Kai theater troupe, which engaged in theatrical performances. The actress Juri Uzuno was his daughter. He also served as the artistic director of Kakehashi-za, an Osaka citizen theater troupe. His major plays include the nine-part cycle Maboroshi, Kage, Yume (Illusion, Shadow, Dream), as well as Himiko Densetsu (The Legend of Himiko), Kurama Ten’nyo (The Celestial Maiden of Kurama), Kono Yo no Hana (Flowers of This World), Rikka Monogatari (The Story of Rikka), Hanabi (Fireworks), and Akai Hōsenka (The Red Balsam). He also penned many television and radio series, including Buchō Keiji (Chief Detective, 1963–1981, ABC) and Hissatsu Shigoto-nin (The Specialized Assassins, 1982–1987, ABC). His other notable scripts include Mayonaka no Blues (Midnight Blues, 1969, NHK), Osaka Don Quixote (1982, NHK), Eiga wo Kutta Otoko (The Man Who Ate the Movies, 1984, Fuji TV), Hana Ichiban (The Best Flower, 1986, Yomiuri TV), and Ai Mujō (Merciless Love, 1988, Tokai TV). He won the Grand Prize and Excellence Award of the Arts Award, the Grand Prix of the JBA Awards, and the Grand Prix of the Hoso Bunka Foundation (HBF).
