Tamukaiseiken

Profile
He was born in Tokyo in 1936. He graduated from Meiji University’s School of Arts and Letters. He subsequently joined Shochiku Ofuna Studio. Taichi Yamada was three years his senior. While working as an assistant director, he also wrote screenplays. He made his directorial debut with the film Tomete Kureruna Okkasan (Don’t Stop Me Mother) in 1969. In the same year, he transferred to Keisuke Kinoshita Productions and began his career as a screenwriter. He then expanded into television, where he won instant fame as a popular scriptwriter with the 1976 NHK morning drama series Kumo no Jutan (Carpet of Clouds). The 1984 morning drama series Romance made history as the first in the program’s run to feature a male lead; it offered a passionate portrayal of young people aspiring to become film directors in the early days of the Japanese film industry. The Taiga drama Takeda Shingen garnered exceptionally high ratings. The catchphrase “Koyoi wa koko made ni itashitō gozarimasuru” (“I would like to end our tale here for tonight”), which was used by Ayako Wakao, who served as the narrator and played Shingen’s mother, Lady Ōi, was selected as Buzzword of the Year. He won the Grand Prize at the National Arts Festival for Relax: Matsubara Katsumi no Nichijō Seikatsu (Relaxation: The Daily Life of Katsumi Matsubara) in 1982 and the 6th Kuniko Mukoda Award for Hashi no Ue ni Oideyo (Come to the Bridge) in 1987. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2000. He died in 2010 at the age of 74.
