- He was born in Tokyo in 1936. He graduated from Rikkyo University’s College of Economics. In 1960, he joined NHK and was in charge of directing radio dramas in the Entertainment and Radio Literature Department. He won the Grand Prize in the Radio Drama Category at the National Arts Festival for Ohayō India (Good Morning, India), which he also penned. In 1968, he transferred to the Television Drama Department. While working as an assistant director for programs, such as NHK’s Ginga drama series, he penned numerous award-winning works that were characterized by his unique style. For Shiki: Ūtopiano (Four Seasons—Utopiano), one of his famous works, he received the Grand Prize at the National Arts Festival (television drama category), the Hoso Bunka Foundation (HBF) Prize (drama category), the Galaxy Award, and the Prix Italia (television drama category), as well as the Excellent Program Award at the International Emmy Awards. His work is characterized by a documentary-style technique that features ordinary people from the locations, as well as poetic use of sound and imagery. After retiring in 1995, he worked as a freelance director. He taught as a professor at the Faculty of Information and Communications at Bunkyo University for 10 years. A unique figure among screenwriters, he was renowned at home and abroad as a film artist, film director, and television director who also wrote his own scripts. He died in 2024 at the age of 88.
