Uehara Shozo

Profile
He was born in Okinawa Prefecture in 1937. While attending Chuo University, he began writing scripts on the themes of the Battle of Okinawa and U.S. military bases. After graduating, he met Eiji Tsuburaya, “the god of special effects,” and his eldest son, Hajime Tsuburaya. Following their advice of “If you want to become a professional scriptwriter, you must first win an award,” he wrote Shūkotsu (Collecting Bones), based on the Battle of Okinawa. The script was awarded Honorable Mention in the Television Script category at the Art Festival. Taking this opportunity, he joined Tsuburaya Special Effects Productions (now Tsuburaya Productions), where he was assigned to the Literary Department. In 1966, he made his professional debut with Episode 21 of the TBS series Ultra Q, titled Uchū Shirei M774 (Space Directive M774). After writing scripts for works such as Ultraman (1966–1967, TBS) and Ultraseven (1967–1968, TBS), he went freelance in 1969. His other works include Kaettekita Ultraman (Return of Ultraman, 1971–1972, TBS), Ganbare!! Robocon (1974–1977, NET [now TV Asahi]), Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (1975–1977, NET), Ganbare! Red Vickies (1978, TV Asahi), and Uchū Keiji Gavan (Space Sheriff Gavan, 1982–1983, TV Asahi). He died in January 2020 at the age of 82.
