- Overview
- This TV drama revolves around a cave-in accident in a coal mine in Fukuoka, depicting the relationships and emotions that transpire up until those trapped in the mine are rescued. Depicted scenes include the emotional conflicts of four coal miners and the canary trapped in the mine, the interaction between their worried families and company owner who rush to the scene, and the desperate rescue operation. It was a live show taken in a studio. Two separate shooting sets were used—one for above ground and the other for inside the mine—to present a realistic picture of the tension of people trapped in an extreme situation. The show had a great impact on subsequent TV drama shows. The show was 90 minutes long, which was unusual for the time. Developed by Ryuzo Kikushima, it featured Daisuke Kato, Rentaro Mikuni, Keiko Tsushima, Murasaki Fujima, and Taiji Tonoyama, among others, and became the first TV drama for Rentaro Mikuni. Won the 11th ACA National Arts Festival Minister of Education Award. As it was simultaneously recorded during broadcast, the whole show is available on film. A film adaptation was released the following year.
