- Overview
- Produced by NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station, this TV drama is set in Kyoto in the aftermath of the Onin War in the Muromachi period, poignantly portraying the love and hate between two brothers involved in creating a stone garden in Ryoanji Temple, as well as the hierarchal nature of feudal society. It was produced under limited conditions—a one-hour live show with only two cameras. They built a stone garden in the studio, preparing sets behind it for the brothers’ room and the princess’s mansion. The two cameras moved through the gaps between the sets, with long cables dragging behind. Staff members ran around while being careful not to obstruct the cameras. The actors got changed while moving between the sets, waiting on standby for the next scene. The cast and staff experienced substantial difficulties in the shooting. Won the 12th ACA National Arts Festival Encouragement Award. The story was developed by Sawako Ariyoshi. The cast included Akira Kume, who played the older one of the gardener brothers, as well as Shigeki Ishida, Kazuko Takamori, Yachiyo Otori, Yoshio Matsuoka, Masaru Sekimoto, Shuyo Take, and Asao Uchida. Directed by Tsutomu Wada. No official recording of this live show remains, but Wada took a kinescope recording of it, which was later released as a video.
