- It is based on a novel by Fumio Niwa. The love scenes were graphic for the time, making it both a popular and controversial work. It was the harbinger of the golden age of afternoon soap operas. Hiroyuki Doi is the president of a publishing company that issues an economics magazine. His wife, Tomoko, has been confined to bed due to illness for about two years. One day, while he was staying at a hot spring inn in Yugawara, Doi meets a passerby named Ikuko Yashiro. Ikuko is a widow and a returnee from Manchuria. She was in financial difficulty but was saved by the president of a jewelry and precious metals business in Ginza. Now she is the president’s mistress. Doi, who has always been devoted Tomoko, is attracted to Ikuko and frequently goes to the tobacco shop that has been placed under her management.
