- This TV series portrays the souls of laborers through power actions and humble dreams of a boy who carves out his own path with robust vitality in a factory town in Kawasaki. It won the 17th ACA National Arts Festival Minister of Education Award. The entire program was shot with a film camera. Mitsuaki Momoyama is a cheerful and openhearted boy. He is the second of four brothers and nicknamed Popeye. His father has passed away, so he lives with his mother and three brothers. The family lives in a modified old third-class train carriage that was scrapped in the grounds of a factory on reclaimed land. One day, however, the eldest son, Kazuhiko, gets crippled due to an accident in the factory. Kazuhiko stays at home doing nothing with a meager unemployment benefit and eventually leaves the house. Not discouraged by this, Popeye becomes a temporary factory worker, earning 230 yen per day to support his family. However, a member of the factory’s facilities division demands that the family leave their current dwelling because of the factory’s plans to extend power service lines. While the grown ups have lost hope, Popeye tries to live on vigorously. But the day of forced eviction approaches...
