- A popular entertainment jidaigeki (period drama) series that recorded a peak audience rating of 42%. It ran for six seasons (157 episodes) in total. Unlike previous jidaigeki TV shows and films, Three Outlaw Samurai was committed to realism. It was the first jidaigeki to use sound effects to give a realistic feel to scenes where people are cut down with swords, and its camerawork was innovative too. The series is said to have had a great impact on subsequent jidaigeki. In the first season, Tetsuro Tamba, Mikijiro Taira, and Isamu Nagato played the three samurai. However, starting from the second season, Tsuyoshi Kato, who had never appeared in a jidaigeki before, joined the trio instead of Tamba, the leader, and Hira assumed the leader role. After the first season finished airing, Shochiku created a film adaptation under the direction of Hideo Gosha. The story is set in the Bunsei Era in the later years of the Edo period. Three veteran ronin (masterless samurai), Shiba Sakon, who is crude but filled with a sense of justice, Kikyo Einosuke, a cool guy who wields two swords, and Sakura Kyojyuro, a master spearman who speaks with a funny Okayama dialect, are on a wandering journey relying only on their swordsmanship. They are confronted by an array of formidable adversaries...
