Domestic drama series featuring a large family and extended running time (one hour)
Overview
The first season aired for six months in the National (Matsushita Electric) Theater slot, which later featured the Mito Komon series, and it continued into the second season. Shichinin no Mago is one of TBS’s most famous large-family drama series along with Tadaima 11 Nin. The protagonist is 73-year-old Ryosaku Kitahara, who was born in the Meiji era. Formerly a successful business owner, he currently lives in retirement with his son, who was born in the Taisho era, and the son’s family. Ryosuke is adored by his seven grandchildren—four grandsons and three granddaughters—who each have a unique personality. The series portrays how Ryosaku, who has been through sweet and sour in life, watches over, advises, and helps his grandchildren who face love- and adolescence-related issues, in the style of an ode to life. One of the attractions of the series was the avant-title where Ryosaku, played by Hisaya Morishige, would candidly express his thoughts about current events and make sarcastic remarks about trends. Another popular feature was the improvised intense arguments between Ryosaku and the housekeeper Otoshi-san played by Kirin Kiki (then known as Chiho Yuuki), who made her drama debut in the series.
