Overview
Written and scripted by Yumie Hiraiwa, this popular Toshiba Sunday Theater series consists of standalone episodes revolving around the romantic affairs of Temari, a popular geisha in the Shinjuku Benten area. Temari is a 25-year-old geisha. She became a geisha to pay off the debt left by her late mother, but she has a dream to open her own small restaurant. After finishing entertaining guests with Komomo, her protegee, Temari heads to Benten Pond in a small food van to fulfill her dream. There she serves miso soup and rice balls made according to her grandmother’s recipe. Although Temari faces a host of problems, which end up being fixed by her miso soup and other delicious dishes, as well as her cheerful and dauntless character. The series portrays the junctures of life—marriage, childbirth, bereavement, etc.—from the perspective of a woman who entered the geisha world. It ran in 38 episodes from 1965 to 1980, consistently achieving a stable audience rating. It was due to the series that the leading actress, Junko Ikeuchi, became known as the “20% audience rating actress.”
