- It is a TV series adaptation (13 episodes) of the novel Freezing Point by Ayako Miura. A film adaptation and multiple remakes of the TV series were later released, including an overseas remake. It received an average audience rating of over 30%, the final episode achieving an audience rating of 42.7% (per Video Research’s Kanto District survey). This was the highest audience rating for a Nippon Educational Television (NET) program in the 1960s. The series turned Yoko Naito into a top star, and Michiyo Aratama received high acclaim for her acting. The series questions the original sin of human beings. The three-year-old daughter of Keizo Tsujiguchi, a hospital director, and his wife Natsue, is kidnapped and murdered when Natsue is meeting in secret with an ophthalmologist working at her husband’s hospital. This terrible incident causes Keizo and Natsue to develop a twisted psychology. Natsue coaxes her husband to adopt a girl in place of Ruriko; Keizo adopts Yoko, who is said to be the daughter of the murderer, without telling Natsue about her background. Yoko grows to be a cheerful child with Natsue’s love and affection. However, Natsue eventually finds out that Yoko is the daughter of Ruriko’s murderer.
