Overview
Won the 6th Broadcast Critics Award (Galaxy Award). The title is based on the namesake work by poet Shosho Chino. The series was created in 1964, but broadcasting was canceled due to its gloomy story. It aired three and a half years later in 1968. It starred Komaki Kurihara who made her debut in the show. Kurihara enrolled in the Tokyo Ballet School to become a ballerina but soon joined the class of the 15th year of Haiyuza Theatre Company’s training school in 1963, following the teaching that you need to undergo basic acting training to do ballet. She took a six-month leave of absence to play the leading part in Mitsumeitari. It is said that the series awakened her to the charm of acting. Set in Kanazawa in the early Showa period, the story depicts the pure love of youths. Underlying the series is anti-war sentiment in the age of militarism. Wakako, the youngest daughter of Mitsumasa Okawa who is a Lieutenant General of the Japanese Army, gets fed up of a formal meeting with her prospective husband and slips away. There she meets Heiichiro, the son of Mitsumasa’s horsekeeper. As they have an enjoyable conversation, the two are gradually attracted to one another...
