- Overview
- It is a TV series that marked the origin of the nationally popular Otoko wa Tsurai yo film series. Directed by Yoji Yamada and starring Kiyoshi Atsumi, the series ran in 26 episodes. It is a human comedy revolving around Torajiro Kuruma, who is a traveling street vendor known as “Futen no Tora-san,” and his dependable younger sister, Sakura. No one knew Torajiro’s whereabouts after graduating from junior high school. But one day, he unexpectedly returns to his hometown. His mother was already deceased, and his father also passed away during his absence. Back in his hometown, Torajiro has a moving reunion with his younger sister Sakura as well as his uncle and aunt. However, Sakura does not know what to make of her slick brother, and she kicks the intoxicated Torajiro out of the house. The following day, Torajiro says farewell to his family and sets out on a journey again. But before he even leaves the town he meets his childhood friend, Fuyuko Tsubouchi, and falls in love with her at first sight. In the final episode, Torajiro tries to make some quick money by making habushu liquor. He goes to Amami Oshima Island to catch some habu snakes but gets bitten by one and dies. Many complaints were received from viewers who were not happy with this ending, and it is said this was what led to the series’ adaptation into a film.
