- Overview
- Won the 25th ACA National Arts Festival Excellence Award and the 1972 Prix Italia Prize. Katsushika Hokusai was an ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, known for works such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. This is a human drama that depicts the life of Hokusai—who gave up his wife, children, honor, and everything else for prints, directed his passion to landscape prints, and earnestly devoted himself to his works—through the eyes of his daughter, Oi. Apart from the story, a variety of Edo’s seasonal features appear in the program. Rentaro Mikuni played Katsushika Hokusai, and Mariko Okada played his daughter Oi (Katsushika Oi). The script was written by Seiji Hoshikawa, who was involved in major productions starring Raizo Ichikawa and Shintaro Katsu at Daiei Film, such as Shinsengumi Shimatsu-ki, the Sleepy Eyes of Death series, and Rikugun Nakano Gakko, as well as Nikkatsu’s productions featuring Hideki Takahashi, Tetsuya Watari, Yujiro Ishihara, Akira Kobayashi, and Sayuri Yoshinaga. Hoshikawa later became a novelist and went on to win the 102nd Naoki Prize for Kodensho in 1989. He subsequently published a series of hits, including Yumekosode, Yagura no Masayume, Rikyu, and Komura Settai.
