Overview
Directed by Kon Ichikawa and starring Atsuo Nakamura, this TV series is based on Saho Sasazawa’s period novel series of a wandering gambler. The series did away with flashy sword fights common in previous jidaigeki (period drama), and included such scenes where Monjiro kept running, or he waves his sword around and bashes—rather than cutting as he hasn’t had any proper training in swordsmanship—his opponents with it. This original action style garnered popularity. It became a popular show with a 30% plus audience rating, and Monjiro’s stock phrase: “It's nothing to do with me,” became a buzzword. Monjiro always has a 15-centimeter-long toothpick in his mouth. This toothpick, which he sharpens himself, was known as his iconic item. The theme song “Dareka ga Kaze no Naka de” sung by Tsunehiko Kamijo became a big hit too. A film adaptation was released in 1972, directed by Sadao Nakajima and starring Bunta Sugawara. Monjiro was born to a poor family of farmer in Mikazuki Village. His parents were about to kill this unwanted newborn, but he was saved by his 12-year-old sister. Later, at age 10, Monjiro leaves his home behind to become a wanderer, and then goes on to become a notorious gambler. Later, while people are suffering from the Tenpo famine, Monjiro gets caught up in some trouble in a post town...
