- Overview
- It is the first installment of the Hissatsu series. Although Hissatsu Shikakenin is based on Shotaro Ikenami’s serial novel, Shikakenin Fujieda Baian, and also the short story, Koroshi no Okite, which inspired the novel, the characters, among other elements, are different from the original. The story is set in the Bunka-Bunsei era of the Edo period. This jidaigeki (period drama) revolves around a team of assassins led by Hanemon, the boss of the Otowaya employment agency, including the ronin (masterless samurai) Nishimura Sanai and the acupuncturist Fujieda Baian. They are paid by clients to eliminate villains who have evaded justice. The innovative visual beauty produced by light and darkness received high acclaim, and Hissatsu Shikakenin won the Galaxy Award for program highly recommended. This type of picaresque jidaigeki where the protagonists are paid to eliminate villains was unusual for the time. This new style of jidaigeki was created with the aim of surpassing the highly popular new wave jidaigeki, Kogarashi Monjiro, that was airing in the same time slot. In spite of the initial concerns raised about the protagonists being assassins, Hissatsu Shikakenin resonated with an unexpectedly large number of viewers. The Hissatsu series continued with the Shiokinin and Shigotonin installments, becoming a long-lasting hit.
