- Overview
- It is the second installment of the Hissatsu series. Nakamura Mondo makes his first appearance in this production and goes on to become the face of the entire subsequent Hissatsu series. A violent criminal was beheaded. However, he was not the criminal but a peasant who was executed in his place. After getting a request from the peasant’s daughter, Nakamura Mondo, Nenbutsu no Tetsu, and Kanoke no Jo form the Shiokinin, a band of assassins. The trio add to the band Ohirome no Hanji, who runs a kawaraban (newspaper) shop, and Teppodama no Okin, a female pickpocket, and embark on a secret endeavor to eliminate rampant evil. In the first installment of the Hissatsu series, Hissatsu Shikakenin, which is based on a novel by Shotaro Ikenami, the Shikakenin has an organizational structure for assigning missions. However, they are a band of former lone wolves and do not have a leader. The central character is Nenbutsu no Tetsu. Nakamura Mondo is an advisor and thus does not always appear. Nakamura Mondo is a no-hoper doshin (a sort of policeman). His colleagues call him “hiru andon” (someone who serves no purpose); at home, his unyielding wife and mother-in-law mock him as a “seedless pumpkin.” Mondo looks like a fool but secretly punishes evil. His character resonated with many company employees working in a controlled society. In addition, Mondo’s tendency of being overwhelmed by his wife and mother-in-law at home continued into the Shigotonin series.
