- Overview
- It is a domestic comedy series produced by Mitsuhiko Kuze. Set in a three-generation masonry shop in an old town, the series revolves around the Terauchis, led by the stubborn old-school father Kantaro, and their day-to-day interactions with those around them. Achieved an average audience rating of 31.3%. It is one of the major domestic drama series by Kuniko Mukoda and was awarded in the TV Awards. The leading character, Kantaro, weighs over 100 kg. Kantaro is hotheaded and quick to lose his temper, so much so that he strikes others—family or not—when he gets angry. But normally he is a tolerant and caring figure, so people admire rather than hate him. The series portrays the warm-hearted interactions between the stubborn Kantaro and his family and neighbors. On the other hand, it also presents more profound themes such as loneliness, aging, and death. It is said that Kuniko Mukoda developed Kantaro’s character based on her own father, who was an insurance company executive. The improvised quarrels that Kantaro has with his mother Kin and son Shuhei became a feature of the show, and the major fight between Kantaro and Shuhei garnered a lot of attention as well. The series produced the punch line where Kin (played by Kirin Kiki) shouts “Julie” while twisting her body. A second season was created the following year, and a TV special was created after the death of Mukoda as well.
