- Legendary die-on-duty scene of Detective Jiipan (Yusaku Matsuda)
- Overview
- It is a TV detective series that ran for 718 episodes from 1972 to 1986. The series revolves around Nanamagari police station’s detective squad led by Shunsuke Todo (played by Yujiro Ishihara). The team of unique detectives solves cases freely and without restraint, contributing to the series’ long-lasting popularity and high audience ratings. One feature was that it established the pattern of casting rookie or unknown actors, such as Kenichi Hagiwara, Yusaku Matsuda, Hiroshi Katsuno, and Toru Watanabe, for leading-character roles, depicting how they grow as a person and ultimately die on duty. It is said that this was originally a desperate measure developed when a member of the initial cast, Kenichi Hagiwara, expressed his earnest desire to step down. The nicknames given to the detectives—Macaroni, Jiipan (Jeans), His Highness, Gori-san, etc.—were popular among viewers. In Episode 111: “Jiipan Shinko sono Ai to Shi,” Detective Jiipan (played by Yusaku Matsuda), who plans to marry his colleague, Nobuko Uchida (Shinko), gets stabbed to death by a criminal who escaped while being escorted by the police. The scene where Jiipan shouts, “What’s on earth is this?” when he sees blood flowing from his body captured widespread attention. After leaving the show, Matsuda rapidly went on to become a film superstar but later died of disease at the age of 40.
