- This profound socio-political TV series is based on the full-length namesake novel by Toyoko Yamasaki, which portrays the inner workings of the upper class and the financial industry from the perspective of the leading character, Daisuke Manpyo, head of the Manpyo conglomerate and president of Hanshin Bank. Running for 26 episodes, it won the 12th Galaxy Award. The series garnered attention for its top-notch cast that included So Yamamura, Yoko Shimada, Utako Mitsuya, Yuzo Kayama, Kei Sato, Yoshiko Kuga, and Mayumi Ogawa. It was adapted into a film starring Saburi Shin in 1974. In addition, TV series adaptations aired on TBS in 2007 starring Takuya Kimura and on WOWOW in 2021 starring Kiichi Nakai. Although Daisuke Manpyo is a talented business manager who leads his bank and a dozen or so subsidiaries of the Manpyo conglomerate, he is an unbridled man at home, having his wife and mistress live under the same roof. Furthermore, he has been obsessed about the suspicious circumstances surrounding the birth of his oldest son, Teppei. Manpyo is confronted with the issue of bank mergers and other moves toward reorganization of the financial industry.
