- This masterpiece youth drama series is set in Kichijoji, Tokyo in the 1970s. The story revolves around Kasuke, a Faculty of Commerce student at a third-class university, Shugakuin University; his classmate Omeda; and Guzuroku, a graduate from Waseda University who is from the same hometown as Kasuke, portraying their passion for living life in their own way and enjoying their youth and freedom. The series ran for 46 episodes. Throughout the series, the episodes made viewers think about friendship and the meaning, worries, and joys of life. The realistic multi-POV story centered around the younger generation garnered popularity. The initial airing schedule was six months, but this was extended to a year owning to its high ratings. The theme song “Oretachi no Tabi,” written and composed by Kei Ogura and sung by Masatoshi Nakamura, was a great hit. Standalone drama specials were created in 1985, 1995, and 2003 as sequels. Kasuke is the basketball club captain. He barely does any job hunting and leads a happy‐go‐lucky life working part-time. In contrast with Kasuke, his best friend Omeda wants a secure job as a company worker. Guzuroku, an older friend from Kasuke’s hometown, is unable to keep working at the same job. The three hate being restrained by the customs in society and personal relationships. Therefore, they launch a company named Nantokasuru Kaisha along with Wakame, who lives in the same apartment and is studying to get into the University of Tokyo.
