- Overview
- It is a youth drama series developed by So Kuramoto, who won the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts for this series and for Uchi no Honkan. Set in the old town of Fukagawa, Tokyo, the story depicts the growth of a shy young chef through interaction with those around him. The narration takes the form of the leading character reading a letter. The series’ title, Zenryaku Ofukuro-sama (lit. “Dear Mother”), is taken from the opening sentence of the letter. Kenichi Hagiwara plays the leading role of Saburo Katashima (Sabu) brilliantly. Other unique cast members such as Tatsuo Umemiya, Kaori Momoi, Mitsuko Oka, Ryoko Sakaguchi, and Masao Komatsu make their presence felt in the series too. Hideo Murota and Takuzo Kawatani, who formed the Pirania Gundan with other supporting actors from Toei, played local steeplejacks in town and gained popularity as a result. Episode 15 won the Excellence Award in the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association Awards. Saburo goes to deliver a message from Heikichi, who married into the wife’s family who runs a Japanese restaurant, to Heikichi’s mistress, Minako. There, Minako suddenly takes Saburo into her room and kisses him. Meanwhile, Saburo is very worried about Umi. The two had a fight; Umi left the apartment and has not come back...
