- Overview
- The official title is Taiheiyo Senso Hiwa: Oshu kara Ai wo Komete, “Kinkyu Angoden Sokoku yo Wahei seyo!” It was produced by Nippon Television and TV Man Union, and won the Excellent Program Award in the TV Awards. It is based on Sengo Hishi by Minoru Omori. While Japan is going down the road to defeat in the late stages of the Pacific War, a navy officer named Yoshio Katsumura is resisting the huge tidal wave of war by carrying out a desperate peace initiative in Switzerland. Through Katsumura, the show raises questions about the meaning of homeland and human love. Juzo Itami plays as a reporter in the story, and people who were actually involved at the time appear in the show as themselves. Not all the witnesses were still alive at the time; an actor appeared in place of a merchant who had passed away. Tatsuya Nakadai played the leading part as Katsumura. Other cast members included Munenori Oyamada, Goro Tarumi, Choei Takahashi, and Hideji Otaki. The show combined elements of documentary and fiction. This was a pioneering work in a genre that later came to be known as docudrama. It involved groundbreaking technology, such as the trial-manufactured compact video cameras, which were used in the overseas shooting.
